My Top Five Llamas of the Decade

1/4/2020

We have made it a bit of a mission in 2020 to help put out some positivity out into the world. As kind of a fun thing we present our top five llamas of the last decade!

Honorable mentions- we considered a lot of names. Something you may notice is that our list contains no female llamas. We did consider a couple of lady llamas. We talked about GNLC Silver Lining, who produced several show winners. Jerrika also suggested Nevara, whose $20,000 auction price at the Hinterland Walkabout Finale was donated to the ILR-SD. Other herdsires like Argentine Mach One, Wunsapana's Aslan and LAMS Nutcracker were also talked about. In the end we came up with our list of five, but we encourage you to name your five, especially if they are different from ours!

#5 - CTF Renegade's Vigilante
Vigilante was an unproven 9 year old when he sold at CarolAnne Tallmon's dispersal sale in 2017. He has produced a few fabulous crias since then, including a sought after trio that Sherri Tallmon sold last year: Armani, Leap of Faith, and Trinity. While his limited production looks promising, the main reason we have put him on this list was for the shot in the arm his $19,750 sales price brought to the industry. The llama market already had some positive momentum prior to his sale, but there certainly seems to have been a visible uptick since.

#4 - KVF Timone's Pride
I have seen this male as one of the top herdsires in the industry for a few years now, but the sale of Marquis Dyamond at MLM in 2019 helped cement his spot on this list. He has, of course, produced several other show winners including: Spicey's Gallant Pride, CVL Pride's Fancy Princess, and CVL Pride's Whispering Angel.

#3 GNLC Crocket
To me he is the superstar of the last few years. 80 crias to date, with more on the way. He has numerous Best of Show winners, Get of Sire wins, and National
Champion offspring to his name. Sire of MSF Show Stopper and MSF Purple Reign among many notable offspring.

#2 - Caesar the No Drama Llama
This is a bit of a new category in the llama world- the celebrity PR llama. In the last decade Caesar went viral for taking a ride on Portland lightrail, appeared in a video narrated by Ryan Reynolds, and was photographed with Oregon Governor Kate Brown. With his partner, Larry Mccool he helped define the term "Llamactavism" by appearing to help support politicians, non-profits, fun events and everything in between. Keep up the good work Larry and Caesar.

#1 - GNLC Merlin
For me there was no other choice here. Merlin sired less than 50 babies before his untimely death at 9 years of age, but what an impact he made with that group. Hightower, Crocket, Sabrego, Switchfoot, Scorcher, Rampart just to name a few. I haven't even mentioned any of his fabulous daughters or popular grandkids. He was a multi-purpose llama who made his mark on the industry in the previous decade and for decades to come.
